Gurney Paragon Mall
Heritage-focused nine-storey mall along Gurney Drive0
Gurney Paragon Mall is Penang’s best centre for an eclectic mix of fashion trends. Set along Persiaran Gurney, the seafront complex is home to more than 40 fashion boutiques and 30 restaurants. However, what makes Paragon utterly unique is the fact that the entire 700,000sqft complex has been built around St. Joseph’s Novitiate, a 1925 chapel that has been beautifully restored and incorporated into the mall’s open-plan layout design.
The mixed development complex comprises the nine-storey mall, plus luxury residences and office towers. High fashion stores are concentrated on the first and second levels, while the best dining opportunities can be found primarily at its al fresco frontage, and its main entertainment offering (an IMAX theatre) tops its ninth floor.
Colonial heritage elements at every corner lend Gurney Paragon Mall a swanky yet inviting feel, by combining post modern pillars, polished marble floors with stained glass windows, Peranakan-inspired mosaic tiles and wrought ironwork trellises. Anchor tenants include local movie theatre giant Tanjong Golden Village (TGV) Cinemas, which occupies the entire top floor. Additionally, there is an extensive food court, Justfood, on the fifth level, as well as UK big box retailer Debenhams, local gymnasium Celebrity Fitness, and supermarket Sam’s Groceria.
Keeping a close eye on up-and-coming fashion trends, Gurney Paragon Mall stays relevant by evolving with the new generation of Penang consumers, providing a mix of iconic department stores, as well as access to both international designer labels and local specialty retailers.
Our favourite feature at Gurney Paragon Mall is its sixth floor which has a dedicated space hosting quirky, one-of-a-kind local designer boutiques such as Dennie Yeap, Missha and Lacititoo Collection. Called Penang on 6, it has an old-fashioned 70s’ vibe with concrete floors and white wood walls, coupled together with plenty of makeshift vendor booths along the walkways. Targeting young shoppers looking for the unique and offbeat, these shops are focused on youth subcultures such as hip hop and its merchandise tend to be inexpensive.
Some of the mall’s retail offerings include well known labels listed below:

Alternatively, restaurants on the first floor dining strip include Italiannies, Morganfield’s, Lunarich, Miam Miam, TGI Friday’s and Brussels Beer Café – besides good food, these venues also provide entertainment like live local bands and televised spots matches on projector screens, plus the view of the ocean is pretty awesome.
Even if you are not lured by the promise of the latest flick to grace the silver screens at the mall’s top level IMAX cinema, then you can choose to indulge at one of Gurney Paragon Mall’s 20 or so wellness retreats, specialising in hair care, nail treatments and reflexology. Some well known spa outfits and beauty retailers here include Thai Odyssey, Strip, Gintell, and Aster Spring Origin of Beauty.
