Having a cocktail high above the city and taking in spectacular views of Penang Island’s city centre just got easier with the launch of the first rooftop bar in Georgetown – Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant & Rooftop Bar. This cool elevated drinking joint tops the four-star Bayview Hotel Georgetown: a two-level penthouse lounge, the indoor level is home to a dining hall which does a slow 360-degree turn, while outside is an open-air lounge where you can plant yourself on modern white bucket armchairs and enjoy vistas that will leave you weak at the knees.
If the views are not enough to tempt you into a romantic mood, cocktails like the RM30 Cut & Bloody Mary, a mix of vodka, tomato, spices, fresh citrus and vegetables, and Between the Sheets (RM30), a blend of cognac, dark rum with orange liqueur, fresh lemon and sugarcane, will definitely do the trick. Located along Lebuh Chulia, The Press Rooftop Bar is a posh, two-storey nightclub that is one of Penang’s current best places to see and be seen at. Downstairs it is a small, intimate space done up primarily with lots of golden dark wood – wooden wall panelling, wood-topped tables and wooden bar stools; the music policy here is a mix of techno, R&B, hip hop and soul. Upstairs, the rooftop is an open air-space featuring a mix of seating styles: there are cabana-like booths with white linen curtains to provide privacy, and simple high tables and chairs closer to the edge (with high railings making sure you don’t fall over).
Drinks-wise you will find the usual selection of cocktails, wines, and beers, and all reasonably priced too.

More than just a dance club, Slippery Senoritas is one of Penang’s only nightclubs with ‘flair’ bartenders who take centre stage every night of the week by executing breathtaking synchronised bottle-juggling and fire-breathing performances. We love the fact that they seem to raise the bar almost every night – on Monday they are skilfully hurling two liquor bottles through the air and catching them: by Sunday, there are cocktail shakers, swizzle sticks, a lime and straw being thrown up into the air too. This is showman bartending at its best.
Opened in 2001, it draws in a young vibrant crowd with two floors for dancing and drinking: the main dance floor’s high-vaulted ceilings and exposed brickwork give it the feel of a sexy South American dance club, while the upstairs terrace spaces are definitely made for intimate footloose action. Modelled after a typical English pub, SoHo Free House is a two-storey pub located along Jalan Penang that is quite a show stealer with everyone – from locals and expats to tourists. The place to head to if you need an urgent fix of Kilkenny or a decent Guinness, downstairs it is divided into an intimate dining area set adjacent to a beer hall with a bar counter, while upstairs there are pool tables and window-seats overlooking Jalan Penang.
Its music soundtrack has a firm focus on classic 80s hits and its all-day happy hour promos are one of its biggest draws. Under the same managements as the award-winning Chin’s Stylish Chinese Cuisine, SoHo Free House’s food has also entered folklore, with people travelling from all over the island to sample its inexpensive English pub grub. Standouts in the menu include homemade chicken burger, with a succulent chicken patty topped with cheddar cheese slices, a fat slice of juicy tomato and crisp lettuce leaf, sandwiched between buttered sesame buns. 5Boom Boom Chambre0

- Address: 50A, Jalan Penang, Georgetown Penang

Located on a piece of prime real estate along Upper Penang Road, the flashy two-storey Boom Boom Chambre is a Vegas-style nightclub that is equal parts fun and funny. The only adult revue in Penang, it is famous for its Vegas-style cabaret drag queen shows from Wednesday to Saturday nights, where theatrical lounge-singing, exaggerated dance moves and a good dose of sizzling sex appeal are the order of the day.
Performers try to engage the audience as much as possible so if you are the type who gets easily flustered, stay towards the back of the room or else you might just get pulled up on the stage by one of them.
- Opening Hours: 17:00 – 03:00
- Address: 3G Upper Penang Road, George Town

Set in the basement of Penang Time Square, Soju Room is one of Georgetown’s oldest dance clubs. Popular with young Penang Island urban trendsetters, inside it is done up in simple black-and-white style, lit up by neon laser lights with a circular stage as its centrepiece, and a dance floor to die for circling it.
Drinks-wise, dive into a menu of imported beers and alcohol from the bar that sprawls all the way from one end of the club to the other. We love its eclectic music soundtrack, with almost every genre represented including (but not limited to) classic rock, indie electro, full on metal and even intense punk and grunge.
- Opening Hours: 21:00 – 03:00 Monday – Saturday
- Address: B2, Entertainment City, Penang Times Square, Jalan Dato Keramat, Georgetown

A five-star boutique hotel, fine-dining restaurant, cafe, wine lounge and cigar den combo, Macalister Mansion is a subtle tribute to Penang’s rich colonial past and its colourful present. One of our favourite places to spend an evening, it resembles the Great Gatsby’s mansion and the concept venue is set inside a refurbished 1900s colonial-style edifice.
Divided into several sections, after-dinner drinks are best had at The Cellar, a bar that stocks over 300 Old and New World wine labels, done up in masculine style, with leather Chesterfield sofas, elk heads on the walls and a fake ‘fireplace’. Conversely, you can visit The Den, a cigar lounge that has been styled to resemble a high-end men’s club. Its cigar offerings include the eponymous Cuban and Dominican varieties, with a menu of single malt scotches from all over the world.
- Opening Hours: 17:00 – 01:00 Monday – Thursday & Sunday: 17:00 – 02:00 Friday & Saturday
- Address: 228 Macalister Road, 10400 George Town, Penang

The perfect spot for a night out with friends in a relaxed yet playful environment, Cuvee is a posh, intimate nightclub set along Jalan Tanjung Tokong in Georgetown. Done up in warm colours, beige cushioned booths coupled with ambient lighting from glass bottle display cases set along the walls as well as neon laser lights set the mood to be both intimate, funky and cosy. Modern artwork covers the walls not lined with glass shelves, adding a gallery-like feel to the overall atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the music does not disappoint, with house, R&B and disco tunes playing, depending on the given night and DJ. The venue attracts an older crowd, ranging from those in their 20s and above, especially when the occasional live band performs.
9That Little Wine Bar0
- Opening Hours: 15:00 – 03:00
- Address: Precinct 10, Jalan Tanjung Tokong, George Town, Penang
- Tel: +6012 421 8486
That Little Wine Bar is a restaurant/ bar combo that has quickly proven that Penang’s reputation as the country’s premier destination for good food need not be confined to a roll call of hawker fare. Housed in a row of beautifully refurbished terrace houses along the quiet side street of Chow Thye, it is a sophisticated yet inviting space.
Opened in 2009, it is run by German expatriate couple: husband Tommes, who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants, is the chef, while his wife Louise mans the front-of-house. The restaurant features a menu of European-inspired soups, salads, sandwiches and tapas, and if that is not enough to impress the bar has an extensive boutique collection of old and new world wine labels (over 50 labels from the world’s best wine-producing regions). Featuring plenty of European flair, the restaurant has two private wine tasting rooms (the Western and Eastern rooms).
- Opening Hours: 17:00 – 24:00 Monday – Thursday; 17:00 – 01:00 Friday – Saturday
- Address: 54 Chow Thye Road, Penang
- Tel: +604 226 8182
Quirky, cute and cool, Monkey Bar is one of Upper Penang Road’s longest-running nightspots. A speakeasy-style bar, staff members are primed with knowledge when it comes to their drinks menu (featuring classic cocktails as well as creative concoctions). However, it is the bar’s Happy Hour beer promos that have us thoroughly impressed – starting from 18:00 every day, you can get three pints of Tiger beer for just RM45.
Interior design-wise it looks like a typical English pub with dim lighting, wooden bar stools, dart boards and framed photographs on the walls, but it does have one standout feature – each table has a distinctive picture of a monkey done up in colourful mosaic tiles. If you are hungry dive into the kitchen’s offerings of western specialities such as fish and chips, but really this is more of an after-dark drinking spot than a place to take a taste odyssey.
