Millionaire’s Row is a seafront neighbourhood housing Penang’s elite. Located along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah (Northam Road) it used to be a whimsical European enclave in Penang’s early days, with stately Straits-style bungalows best described as unabashed exhibits of wealth.
Today some of these ornate and ostentatious mansions have survived and are occupied by the descendents of the original rich Chinese towkay patriarchs who first settled here. Though this stretch is beginning to look a little run down, with some bungalows looking a little worn out, it is still a supremely pretty place for shutterbugs to snap a few photos.
Good to Know
These sprawling homes cost anywhere from the low millions, and feature varying architectural styles, ranging from mansions and townhouses to esoteric modern creations or other imposing designs. The Protestant Cemetery, the oldest Christian cemetery in Penang, is set not far from this stretch.
Due to its prime location in Georgetown, Millionaire’s Row has become a popular spot for commercial purposes with corporate office towers mushrooming along the stretch. Also known as Millionaire's Mile, it is similar to the exclusive residential neighbourhood of Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Florida (also called America's Billionaires’ Playground).
