Having a cocktail high above the city and taking in spectacular views of Penang Island’s city centre just got easier with the launch of the first rooftop bar in Georgetown – Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant & Rooftop Bar. This cool elevated drinking joint tops the four-star Bayview Hotel Georgetown: a two-level penthouse lounge, the indoor level is home to a dining hall which does a slow 360-degree turn, while outside is an open-air lounge where you can plant yourself on modern white bucket armchairs and enjoy vistas that will leave you weak at the knees.

Every table at this revolving restaurant offers a constantly changing view. Over the course of a meal we get the chance to see the whole of Penang – one minute we are looking at the colonial-era architecture of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel next door, and then the next minute the views are of the sea.

Thanks to the curved walls and the restaurant’s layout of two rows of tables lined up in single file around the perimeter, the seating is intimate and makes it easy to take full advantage of the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Meanwhile, the outdoor roof deck is almost as large as the circular dining hall, with the bar’s 11 taps dedicated to imported beers (mostly German and Belgian drafts).

Although it is tough to compete with the views, the menu effortlessly does that at Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant & Rooftop Bar, stealing our attention away with attractively-presented western dishes offering natural flavours that speak for themselves. The food arrives fast enough: to start with we opt for a restaurant specialty of beef consommé with julienne of vegetables – a creamy and satisfying blend. We also sample the Caesar salad, one of the best we have ever tasted – creamy and full of flavour, it is a dish that will have us coming back for more.

On to mains we go for the oven-baked crispy on the outide and juicy on the inside coral trout (RM102) with a golden egg crust, served with baby potatoes and haricots verts, topped with a lemon anchovy sauce that gives the dish a real zing. Besides that, we sample the tender char grilled rib eye of beef (RM118) with soft polenta and another side of Caesar salad.

If the views are not enough to tempt you into a romantic mood, cocktails like the RM30 Cut & Bloody Mary, a mix of vodka, tomato, spices, fresh citrus and vegetables, and Between the Sheets (RM30), a blend of cognac, dark rum with orange liqueur, fresh lemon and sugarcane, will definitely do the trick.   

Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant & Rooftop Bar is also notable for its split-personality music: in the dining hall the tunes range from slow jazz to romantic classics, while outside it goes from pop and radio hip-hop numbers to under-the-radar drum & bass, house and techno.
