Soho Free House Penang is a pub with a reputation as a long-standing institution in Georgetown, best-known for its all-day Happy Hour beer promotions. An old-school British pub with a friendly crowd of predominantly-expat locals, one of the best things about this place is that, when it is closing time, the doors get locked up but they will serve you all night, making you feel like part of the family.
A two-storey pub on Jalan Penang, the décor is unpretentious, with colonial heritage elements – think worn wood trellises, stained glass windows and lots of beer-themed paraphernalia on the walls. It is an understated look and, though the beer deals at Soho Free House Penang are a good reason to visit, the food certainly adds to the pleasure of a night here.

Soho Free House certainly puts quite a lot of the island’s nightlife venues to shame, offering a glorious location for drinking and serving and a space perfect for social interaction.
Food-wise, expect a dining menu of pastas, seafood and comfort food that is interesting, diverse and very generously-portioned. To be clear, we are supreme fans of its old-school British pub food, like bangers and mash or traditional shepherd’s pie. A meal here is certainly a joyous occasion that involves lots of meat and extra rations of baked potatoes. Another standout on the menu is the homemade chicken burger, with a succulent chicken patty topped with cheddar cheese slices, a fat slice of juicy tomato and crisp lettuce leaf, sandwiched between buttered sesame buns.
Meanwhile, drinks at Soho Free House Penang includes beers from incredibly-good-at-brewing countries like Belgium, Germany, and France including Kilkenny and a decently-poured Guinness. Downstairs, the space is divided into an intimate dining area adjacent to a beer hall, while upstairs are pool tables and window-seats overlooking Jalan Penang.
Soho Free House’s music soundtrack has a firm focus on classic ‘80s hits and you can expect service that is exemplary. Combining that together with its friendly atmosphere, good food and simple yet satisfying drinks, Penang Soho Free House certainly provides a nightlife experience that is utterly enjoyable.
