Hard Rock Cafe Penang is an island celebrity. Situated on Jalan Batu Ferringhi, it is sure to leave you with more than a few fond holiday memories. Opened in 2009, you can count on the brand’s iconic memorabilia, enthusiastic staff as well as great burgers and a thoroughly-classic American rock vibe.
The interior design of the pub is retro cool – think wooden tables, Tuscan-red walls lined with gold vinyl records and flat-screen TVs playing 80s music videos – all giving it a diner look. Then add in the brand’s trademark music collectibles in glass cabinets and on the walls, and you get an almost chaotic yet chic ‘junkshop’ appearance.

Located adjacent to the Hard Rock Hotel Penang, the atmosphere is different depending on what time you visit: if you are here in the afternoon the vibe is mellow and relaxing, with jazz and Top 40 hits playing. In contrast, at night the place turns into an electrifying gastro pub that pulls in quite a crowd, thanks to their daily live cover band performances.
Though the stage usually hosts local acts, Hard Rock Cafe Penang does tend to mix it up once in a while with international acts – previous superstar performers include Bob Marley’s Jamaican backing band, The Wailers, while Dia Frampton, runner-up on the first season of the US edition of The Voice, is scheduled to perform on January 25, 2014.
The hotel itself is home to over 500 pieces of music keepsakes and you will see a portion of this collection within the cafe. There is a two-piece suit worn by Phil Collins on his 1982 solo tour, a Mapex drum set used by Guns ’n’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum on their 1993 ‘Use Your Illusion’ tour and a Sekova bass guitar played by the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman.
Meanwhile, indie rock band enthusiasts will be tickled by Weezer lead guitarist Brian Bell’s easily-recognisable button-down shirt (he wore a variation of it in most of the band’s music videos) used on tour from 2001 – 2005. Plus, there is a velvet jacket-suede-trousers combo worn by Ratt guitarist Warren DiMartini, and a set list from The Who’s 2000 show in Sheffield, England.
When it comes to food, generous portions are the rule of the day at Hard Rock Cafe Penang, so you really get what you pay for. The menu comprises typical Americana specialties like freshly hand-breaded onion rings, milkshakes, cheese nachos and barbecued chicken wings, but it is its legendary burgers that have gained the cafe such a wide fan base.
We recommend the sizeable legendary 10oz burger – a juicy beef patty, topped with salty turkey bacon strips, melted slices of Cheddar cheese, a crisply-fried tangy onion ring, crunchy lettuce, ripe slivers of tomato and sharp pickles, all sandwiched between toasted buns. Alternatively, if you do not mind a spicy kick to your meal, order legendary percik burger, a juicy beef patty basted with fiery spices and topped with refreshing cucumber slices and sweet and piquant fried onion straws.
Besides the kitchen’s excellent repertoire of hearty western food, expect the usual desserts to cap off your meal. The restaurant’s thick and creamy milkshakes go brilliantly with its burgers, however if you are looking for a more traditional, thoroughly mid-west way to end your meal, we recommend fresh apple cobbler. Topped with crunchy, salty walnuts and a ribbon of intense caramel sauce, the crisp, sweet apple slices in the buttery pie crust are further infused with flavour with the addition of a frosty scoop of milky vanilla ice cream on the side.

Hard Rock Hotel Penang
With busts of The Beatles in the lobby and autographed Sex Pistols albums in the corridors, there is little doubt about the four-star Hard Rock Hotel Penangs theme - its extravagant Vegas-esque vibe is a refreshing departure from traditional beachside hotels.Everything spells stardom, from the giant music-related murals and rock star memorabilia to the open-air lobby with a reception/bar combo. The hottest action revolves around the energetic Hard Rock Cafe, which acts as regular host to live bands.Perfect for entourage wannabes is the sexy, see-and-be-seen-in freeform pool, but we also dig the for-hire mountain bikes, poolside dancing sessions, and canoe racing and pool-pillow fights.
