That Little Wine Bar restaurant is proving that Penang’s reputation as the country’s premier destination for good food need not be confined to a roll call of hawker fare. Sophisticated yet inviting, locals just call it TLWB. Set on the quiet side street of Chow Thye, it comes highly recommended.
Opened in 2009, it is run by German expatriate couple: husband Tommes, who has worked in Michelin-star restaurants, is the chef, while his wife Louise, mans the front-of-house. The restaurant is housed in a row of beautifully refurbished terrace houses and features a menu of European-inspired soups, salads, sandwiches and tapas.

Though kerbside cuisine is one of Penang’s claims-to-fame, it is slowly embracing fine dining and putting a healthy Penang spin on it. Just as hotels on the island feature unique boutique style, so do these new breed of restaurants. The stylish, quaint and cosy That Little Wine Bar is leaving its indelible mark on Penang’s culinary landscape. It can be classed as a fine-dining joint but it fits the profile of a boutique restaurant better: a small, independent, local eatery with plenty of flair and a distinctive menu.
On The Menu
Start off your meal at The Little Wine Bar restaurant with the signature wild mushroom soup (a clear broth uniquely seasoned with herbs and red chillies): also try their chicken pate served with homemade baguette and a mushroom quiche that is in a league of its own.
For mains, repeat customers say that one of the best items on the menu is the beef carpaccio with generous shavings of Parmigiano, black olives and rocket salad: the thick layers of meat almost seem to melt in your mouth. Also try juicy yet tender rotisserie chicken with creamy avocado, potatoes and salad and black and white sesame seared tuna.
Dessert & Drinks
Cap off your meal with the restaurant’s signature chocolate cake: fluffy and deeply chocolate-y, it is enough to satisfy anyone’s sweet cravings. However if you are looking for something more unique then try the carpaccio of pineapple: thinly sliced pineapples with strawberry and raspberry coulis and paired with ice cream.
Besides the amazing food, That Little Wine Bar restaurant is also known for its extensive boutique collection of old and new world wine labels (over 50 labels from the world’s best wine-producing regions). Featuring plenty of European flair, the restaurant has two private wine tasting rooms (the Western and Eastern rooms).
