Mews Café Penang in Muntri House Hotel may look like a hip but traditional kopitiam (coffee shop), although its laidback ambiance reminds us heavily of an Australian beachside bistro for surfers. An unpretentious place alive with personality, at its heart this café is a proud and firmly-rooted local business, determined to champion the island’s fiercely-competitive culinary scene.
Subtly balancing the demands of heritage and modernity expertly, Mews Café is a place where both traditionalists and the young urban set are amply catered for, with the menu split into two categories – local and western. The cuisine is matched by the restaurant’s house red and white wine options and diners can round off a meal with the kitchen’s short but sweet list of dessert offerings.

Diners entering the Mews Café Penang immediately find themselves enveloped in a world of genuinely casual sociability. Interior design-wise, expect to find ornate china dishware and white marble tabletops, along with four-poster beds with gauzy curtains and mosaic tile work floors, that create a look at once traditional but trendy.
Food-wise, Mews Café offers a fairly extensive menu of food packed with flavour and down-to-earth inventiveness. Generously-portioned (which means you will be able to share), presentation is funky with the kitchen team imbuing each dish with local garnishings to create a pretty sight. Many of its dishes are simple, but with flavour to the fore, no less original.

When it comes to the local side of the menu, our favourite is the tender chicken tikka with spicy curry sauce, served with a side of savoury eggplant salad and crispy pappadam. If you are not the adventurous sort, stick to the creamy spicy smoked duck pasta (RM20), which deserves special mention for its unique bold flavour, and the comfortingly-familiar beef lasagne (RM32). Also don’t forget to check out the seasonal blackboard specials, for one-of-a-kind mains with beautifully balanced flavours.
