Presenting diners with an inviting ambiance no matter the time of day, guests at Feringgi Grill can feast their eyes on views of the garden if you manage to get a table near the full length windows. Polished wooden floors, stonewashed brick walls, richly-upholstered furniture and ornate frieze work lend the space an inviting feel, and results in a setting reminiscent of Paris in the 1930s.
The elegant main dining room also has a grand piano, with daily performances from either a pianist performing haunting tunes, or a live band belting out popular easy listening favourites. Take note that children under the age of seven are not permitted in Feringgi Grill restaurant, in an effort to preserve its elegant fine dining atmosphere.
The food at Ferringhi Grill restaurant is innovative, creative and oddly comforting – perhaps because it is prepared in such a style as to preserve its original flavour. For example, the fresh grouper fillet’s (RM98) meat is not messed around with too much, and simply accompanied by a rich béarnaise sauce, and side of roasted garlic mashed potatoes. This emphasis on freshness and even the addition of local ingredients imparts bold flavour into each dish, plus you can even indulge in some exploratory dishes.
However the ultimate item on this restaurant’s menu is the tender and juicy steak Diane (RM165), which is flambéed with Cognac table-side, and then set on a bed of smooth mushroom sauce, and served with soft gratin potatoes and crunchy vegetables. Complement your meal with a glass of wine from the restaurant’s extensive wine list – and if you are at a loss on what to choose, there is a sommelier on hand to help you make the best choice. Whatever you choose to order, Ferringhi Grill promises to deliver a delicious dinner and a memorable fine-dining experince.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang
Divided into two wings (with a separate driveway and entrance for each), the five-star Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is a pretty impressive property spread out across 30 acres along the famous Batu Ferringgi beach. The whole hotel has been fitted out in traditional Minangkabau style - in fact, in line with this, the hotel hosts a time-honoured Malay musical performance every Friday outside its Garden Wing lobby. We love the five-storey Rasa Wing: built in 1973, it has an exclusive feel, offering guests little extras such as afternoon tea, all day cocktails and evening canapes. This side of the hotel is home to Ferringgi Grill, an award-winning, fine-dining restaurant, plus the property also plays host to five other restaurants and bars.
