Chin’s Stylish Chinese Cuisine restaurant is the type of place that makes you expect the taste of the unusual. Utilising less oil and salt and employing a tantalizing blend of spices from all over the world, the textures and flavours of the food here make it a welcome addition to Penang’s culinary scene.
A luxurious yet charming fine dining establishment, Chin’s has a menu of traditional Hunan and Sichuan recipes. That statement may be an oversimplification of this amazing restaurant though: the interior, richly decorated with ornate and opulent modern art plus unique fixtures, makes it difficult to focus on what’s on your plate, while the food itself is without a question both elegantly presented and tasty.
History of Chin’s Stylish Chinese Cuisine
The first branch of this award-winning eatery was opened in New King’s Road, London in 1987 and this classy establishment quickly took England’s gastronomy scene by storm. In 2010, riding the waves of success after the flagship restaurant’s success, owner, UK-trained graphic designer Dave Chin Hooi Meng, decided to set up a branch in Penang. He also owns QEII, SOHO Free House on Penang Road and SOHO Country House in Auto City.
With an award-winning pedigree and various magazines praising its cuisine, the Penang branch went on to earn highly coveted awards and numerous accolades in quick succession. In 2011 the Penang branch won the HAPA Award, was listed as one of the Best Restaurants in Malaysia by the Malaysian Tatler then was nominated as one of Asia’s Top 20 restaurants by the Miele Guide.
Design of Chin’s Stylish Chinese Cuisine
Enjoying a seafront location on Church Street Pier in Georgetown and overlooking the harbour, its striking red glass doors lead you into a place both elegant and seductively alluring. Glittering chandeliers, contemporary Chinese art, crisp table settings with gorgeous hand-painted plates, lavish chairs and a glass top bar with calligraphy illuminated with different lights, all add up to a sense of refinement.
The glass-enclosed dining hall can comfortably accommodate up to 90 covers.
Appetisers & Drinks
With a kitchen headed up by chef Wang Zhi Zhong, the restaurant is popular for its table d'hôte menu. For appetisers start off with pai suan huang gua (garlic cucumber), bang bang chicken, shang shang qian (heavenly blessed joysticks: skewers of seashell meat, baby abalone and sea fungus dipped in a pungent chilli oil) and xia duo shi (sesame prawns on toast). The perfect accompaniment to these light dishes is Malan, a South African red wine that is light, fruity and woodsy.
Besides South African labels, Chin’s Stylish Chinese Cuisine has a fine collection of top shelf liquors and a wide selection of red and white wines.
Mains & Dessert
For mains, Peking duck lovers will appreciate the mouth-watering zhao pai xiang su ya (aromatic crispy duck) that is rightfully popular. Shredded at your table, it is a unique dish that blends slivers of scallion, cucumber and crispy duck in a steaming pancake.
Meanwhile, lovers of seafood should try the house specialty, lobster in noodles: also try shuang jiao ye sheng dan shui yu (double-flavoured wild freshwater perch), hot and spicy hot poached fish and savoury and fragrant sai pang xie (crab and yolk).
The dessert menu at Chin’s Stylish Chinese Restaurant is limited: however highly recommended is nan gua dou sha bing (deep-fried pumpkin cake with sweetened bean paste), a steaming hot sweet that proves to be a pleasant combination of flavours.
