Amelia Café in Penang

Georgetown Restaurants & Dining

NOTICE : Amelia Café has closed.

Amelia Café is a small, quirky bistro run by a husband-and-wife team. Almost every conceivable surface is whimsically decorated: the walls, ceiling and each menu features colourful artwork while tables and shelves are covered with tiny trinkets that, thankfully, fall short of looking haphazard.

Raw and rustic, tiny Amelia Café restaurant is comprised of four tables and a counter that doubles as a dining bar and kitchen. Some may find it cluttered but the fantastic food (particularly the bacon bagels and pasta) more than makes up for its miniscule size.

Decor of Amelia Cafe

Located along the same row as Edelweiss Café in a spot along Armenian Street (beside the Cheah Kongsi), the bistro has a ‘no photographs’ policy inside the restaurant, as shutterbugs cannot seem to stop snapping away, impeding service.

The thing that makes Amelia Café so charming is its décor: everything in here seems to be recycled. Jam bottles are used as glasses, cups and saucers are quirkily mismatched, rickety school chairs and tables that have been lovingly restored are used as furniture, brass cooking pots and planters with greenery are all over the place, menus are individualised with artwork, bookshelves line the walls and a rickety staircase leads upstairs.

On The Menu

The bacon and cream cheese bagel is admittedly the best thing on the menu, everyone will tell you that, but you can also start off your meal with mushroom soup: the creamy broth is delicious and filled with lots of chunky mushrooms.

For mains the homemade linguine pomodoro and aglio e olio pasta (both served with pork sausage) are recommended. If you are looking to grab a sandwich then the scrambled egg and parmesan sandwich is a good choice and the delicious risotto pork bacon can only be described as heavenly comfort food.

Dessert & Drinks

When it comes time for dessert and drinks, try the panna cotta with plum sauce and a crepe with frozen mango yoghurt accompanied by a cappuccino. Amelia Café restaurant has daily specials that only lend more appeal to its limited menu: an example of this is the passion fruit and banana lassi.
