On The Menu
Designed to please even the most discerning palate, stick with 1885 restaurant’s signature dishes. Start off with creamy mushroom soup and Caesar salad with romaine lettuce and a healthy sprinkling of parmesan cheese: these dishes are simple yet effective appetisers.
For mains, seared scallop teamed with saffron is highly recommended, although its petite portion is a little disappointing. Also good is the light and fluffy lobster bisque with spiced dhal emulsion: it is a classic choice that you really can’t go wrong with. Additionally, the crispy and rich buttery pan-grilled cod and the tempura prawn and green soba are also good choices. For meat lovers the 1885 chateaubriand, a juicy tenderloin steak that simply melts in your mouth, is a not-to-be-missed experience.
Traditional Afternoon English Tea
1885 restaurant’s strength is that it manages to be highly creative with ordinary dishes: take, for example, its super popular quintessential English afternoon tea. There is a variety of cakes and sandwiches available but each dish has been uniquely reinvented: the club sandwich is a unique blend of avocado and soft-shell crab.
If the idea of dinner here is too much for your pocketbook, then have afternoon tea here instead: the selections of scones, jams, sandwiches (smoked salmon, tuna and cucumber), cakes, puffs, cookies and teas available are simply staggering, and the fact that they are all delicious makes the bill seem insignificant.
